Understanding Anxiety And The Different Kinds
Anxiety is a normal emotional feeling. However, when this changes to strong feelings of fear and worry that disrupt your normal routine, you might be suffering from a disorder. The common symptoms of an anxiety disorder include; apprehension, fear, worry, and excessive nervousness. Thus, many people suffer in silence. And the suffering is heightened by a lack of awareness about the disorder that can lead to depression. Below are the common types of anxiety disorder.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
The main symptom of GAD is excessive worry about daily things. Fear of things that do not frighten other people. For example, you might have concerns that someone might beat you when walking along the road. This instance is possible but very unlikely. Excessive worry is also common among people suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Other symptoms include:
- Unwanted thoughts
- Heart palpitations
- Strong fear about everything
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder symptoms are adverse concerns, ritual, and repeated thoughts. These are thoughts that interfere with daily life. For instance, if someone is suffering from an OCD. And after leaving the house, they might be worried that the taps are running. The thoughts persist even after going back to the house over four or five times. Even after checking the house, they are not convinced that the taps are not running.
Common symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder are rituals. And these rituals may include things such as washing hands every time. Thus, to prevent contracting diseases. Or getting everything in order to make them calm.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Also known as social phobia, it’s a fear of being judged by others. It’s difficult for people with Social Anxiety Disorder to maintain friendships. Due to fear of judgment, people with this disorder isolate themselves from any social interaction.
Panic attacks are the main symptoms of panic disorder. Also, these are convulsive waves of terror experienced by the human body. Hence, people suffering from panic attacks experience difficulties in breathing. Thus, they may look like they are dying.
The attacks subside after about an hour. And after the attack, one might be fatigued and unable to continue with their work. Also, experiencing panic attacks once or twice in life is normal for humans. However, repeated attacks in weeks or months are a sign of the anxiety disorder.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD develops after experiencing something out of the ordinary. And also, the symptoms of PTSD are depression and anger. Some of the traumatic experiences that trigger PTSD includes:
- Child abuse,
- A victim of rape,
- Serving in the military, or
- A victim of terrorism.
There is a treatment for all types of anxiety disorders. If you notice you have either of the disorder, seek help from a trained professional. Thus, a skilled professional will help you overcome your anxiety. And also they will give you coping techniques. Hence, talk therapy is an excellent way of treating all anxiety disorders. And medicine is not encouraged as a form of treatment.
Doing self-examination time over time is essential. Take some time weekly to inspect your actions and thought patterns. Also, in the case where you identify any of the symptoms of anxiety disorder, seek help. Look after your family and colleagues. The symptoms cannot go away on their own. Hence, untreated anxiety disorder leads to depression.
